Witch Fest?
How did I not know that there was a Witch Fest? Witches are my favorite part of Halloween.
My Aunt Kellie & cousin Roxanna both spent the previous weekend at Witch Fest! And now...I am jealous! I want to put on my witchy finest and go play!
Next year, this witch is there!
Gardner Village in West Jordan, Utah presents Witch Fest!

Really classy, Marie Claire.
Marie Claire magazine has caused quite a bit of uproar today. Or more to the point one of their columnists, Maura Kelly, caused a bit of an uproar. Her article entitled "Should fatties get a room?" gave Ms. Kelly more attention than she probably ever thought she would get. The "fatties" in question of her blog are the stars of CBS's new comedy "Mike and Molly" about two overweight people that meet at an Overeaters Anonymous meeting and fall in love.
Ms. Kelly takes exception to the fact that two "fatties" have a show. Her thoughts on the subject? "So anyway, yes, I think I'd be grossed out if I had to watch two characters with rolls and rolls of fat kissing each other ... because I'd be grossed out if I had to watch them doing anything. To be brutally honest, even in real life, I find it aesthetically displeasing to watch a very, very fat person simply walk across a room — just like I'd find it distressing if I saw a very drunk person stumbling across a bar or a heroine addict slumping in a chair."
She goes on to note that she is not a "size-ist" (what a clever play of racist, right? Yes, that was sarcasm) because she does have friends that could be considered plump. And Kelly is so concerned about the fatties of the country that she offers weight loss tips because, ya know, none of us have ever tried to lose weight. She notes, furthermore, that she has not even see the TV show because she finds most television to be "junk food". She concludes with "Am I being an insensitive jerk?"
Naturally, she got piled on by people outraged by her ignorant and yes, insensitive article. It prompted an apology from her, which she revealed that she has suffered from anorexia, and that she never meant to come off as rude or a bully. Of course, then she takes the time to then get in a few more digs about the overweight population.
When I first saw the hoopla start up over the Marie Claire post, I wasn't going to read it because I personally didn't care to see what I knew would be insulting words. But I gave in and read it. And the first thing I felt was instant shame. Oh my God, here is this woman saying how repulsed she would be to see an overweight person. Not only repulsed by it but she takes the time to compare fat people to alcoholics and drug addicts. Author Stacey Ballis blogged a fabulous response where she does mention the fact that overeating is an addiction, just like alcoholism, gambling, drug use, and any number of addictions out there. I felt ashamed that yes, I am a "fat girl" and that here was this woman, who does not know me, writing bullying words that made me cringe. Then I got angry at her. Who does Maura Kelly think she is? She, in fact, does not know me. She doesn't know the person that I am. I happen to like the person I am. Yes, I do need to lose weight. Yes it has been a constant battle that I have fought and have yet to conquer. But her little opinion is insulting. Of course, she is welcome to her opinion, just like I am welcome to my opinion. She is stating that just because I am overweight, I should be hidden away and ignored? That I have no rights to a life or love because I am not a size 6? To that I have to say the one that should feel ashamed is Maura Kelly for being so narrow minded. I hope in her little world, she finds happiness. In this great big world, she is going to be the one that has to stay hidden away in a bubble to avoid seeing all the things that turn her off.
For the record, I like Mike & Molly. I think the show is funny and I love the stars. Yes, they do go a bit overboard with the fat jokes, but they also are showing a bit of reality. There are people of all shapes and sizes in this world and they all deserve to have someone love them.

Halloween Safety Tips
A friend shared this with me so I'm passing on this life saving information!
Do not search the basement, especially if the power has gone out.
If your children speak to you in Latin or any other language that they should not know, WORRY!
If appliances start operating by themselves, do not check for short circuits; leave immediately.
If you find a town which looks deserted, there’s probably a good reason for it. Do not stop and look around.
If you’re running from a monster, expect to trip or fall down at least twice. Don’t keep looking back, he’s still there.
If your companions suddenly begin to exhibit uncharacteristic behavior such as hissing or glowing eyes, report it.
If your car runs out of gas on a lonely road, do not go to the nearby deserted-looking house to phone for help.
Beware of strangers bearing tools. For example: chainsaws, staple guns, and hedge trimmers.
When investigating a noise and lights don’t turn on, STOP!
If your childrens favorite dolls or toys begin telling you things, get rid of them.

Friday Four aka Brain on Shuffle random thoughts
While listening to my morning radio show this morning they brought up the happiness scale and honestly where are you on said happiness scale?
So I had to give it a bit of a thought…I think I would say a solid 7.
Professionally it is a low number so it can’t give my overall number a higher outcome.
What is your number on the happiness scale?
----------------------------------
My work is having a Halloween cubicle decorating contest that I am *thinking* about entering. Last years winner was pathetic. It was some green spider web and plastic skeletons. Actually it was the theme of all the cubicles last year – spider web and plastic skeletons. Boooooring!! It was actually in the rules so they didn't offend people. *shrugs* Your guess is as good as mine.
My only big concern is if I bring some of my cuter stuff in that it will get stolen.
----------------------------------
Game 6 of the ALCS tonight! Come on, Yankees!!!
----------------------------------
"Back to the Future" is back in the movie theaters for the 25th Anniversary. I think I will go take in a showing tomorrow at 12:30.

Spooky and Kooky Halloween
I just thought I would put up a spooky…okay, kooky…Halloween quiz/meme up.
What is the scariest movie you have seen?
Stephen King’s IT! I have a fear of clowns and that just scared the crap out of me.
What movie was supposed to be scary but was not?
Nightmare on Elm Street 2010. Oh good heavens, the movie was stupid! I went in expecting to be scared, but yeah no.
Favorite Halloween costume?
I can’t remember if it was Wonder Woman or Bat Girl…I always wanted to be Princess Leia.
Favorite Halloween candy?
Kit Kat, baby! Or candy apples. Oh yummy, on the candy apple!! I want one now.
Favorite vampire?
William the Bloody aka Spike from “Buffy the Vampire Slayer”
Favorite horror movie villain?
I do generally like that creepy Freddy Krueger, but it has to be the Robert Englund version.
Favorite “Halloween” type song?
“Monster Mash”! It makes me wanna get up and dance and trick-or-treat!
Tricks or Treats?
Hmmm, depends on the tricks and the treats. A good trick is hard to resist.
Any Halloween traditions?
For some reason we have chili on Halloween night. *shrugs* I have no idea…it is just what happens. I am not overly fond of chili.
Are you dressing up this year?
I was going to be a cat, but have been lazy and haven’t put anything together yet…we’ll see if I can get it down in the next two weeks or if I just hole up in the house and pretend I don’t hear the doorbell.
The Munsters or the Addams Family? Which one would you rather be part of?
The Addams Family embraced their kooky so I have to choose them. The Munsters were too busy trying to fit in and be as normal as possible.
Scariest Experience?
At Tina’s house. We were watching TV when we noticed her roommate’s parrot was facing the wall, talking to someone and you could see his feather’s being ruffled as if he was being pet. A few minutes later the TV and VCR shut off and the tape was spit out of the VCR, the lights all went out in the kitchen and the stove turned on. With that, I was out the door and never returned.

Just another manic Monday!
It was a busy weekend with some Cabaret, Krispy Kreme donuts, niece’s 6th birthday party, some good cinema, pancakes, and good laughs. Along with a couple of simply divine naps thrown in for good measure. (Insomnia is not my friend…I quite dislike it. So I nap when I can lately.) We used to have Krispy Kreme donuts all over the valley, but they all went out of business and closed. Maybe a year ago, they re-opened three of them. Tina and I were way early for the Cabaret show on Friday night so we decided to take a donut detour. The new Krispy Kreme is in a large building now, the downside is no drive-thru so you have to find parking in a busy area. They have a wii set up for the kiddos and really nice interior seating. The best part, though, is the milk bar. You could either get a “shot” of milk or a glass and there were numerous flavor shots that you could get put in your drink. Awesome.
I went to see “Red” on Saturday night…it was pretty good. I absolutely love Bruce Willis. I have a massive crush on him and have since “Moonlighting”. The cast was pretty solid. Willis, Morgan Freeman, Helen Mirrin, John Malkovich, Richard Dreyfus, Mary Louise Parker, and Karl Urban (whom I love from the Lord of the Rings trilogy and he was McCoy in the new Star Trek reboot). I definitely recommend it.
Speaking of lovely cinema, The Reel: Box Office Buzz is back! I will be contributing a weekly movie review over there.
And even more lovely news – my best friend, Rose, is back in the blogging saddle! Check her out: Brown-Eyed Girl's Glance at the World. I also want to disclaimer here that I reserve the right to deny any stories she tells that involve my person. Her memory gets a little hazy sometimes and she forgets that she causes the chaos, not me.
I would take time on my soap box and talk about condescending work attitudes and those “friends” that are really just more trouble/drama than anything else, but I don’t have the time or energy to even bother. Oh hell, I am going to say this -- The mere fact that *you* spend so much of your time asking if people are jealous of you is pretty sad. The fact is no, no one is jealous, people pity you and the empty shell that you call your life. When the only thing that gets you through the day is to wonder who is jealous of you, that is sad.

Getting paranormal with Rose
When I was thinking about doing something fun and absolutely spooktacular on the blog for the month of October, I knew that I wanted to interview my best friend and share that with you. Rose Lucivero is one of the co-founders of NYSIP, a paranormal investigation group located in Long Island, NY. I will warn in advance that while no scary bits are contained in the following interview, you are going to glimpse a pretty typical Michelle-Rose conversation that is off the wall and yes, these are “inquiring minds want to know” questions that we would normally discuss.
Thanks for doing the interview! So to start with tell me a little bit about NYSIP?
New York Society Investigating the Paranormal (NYSIP) is a non-profit paranormal investigative group that my friend Liz and I founded. We currently have (6) members and now (2) trainee’s. What I find really cool is that my own mom is a part of our group as well. Should you wish to visit our web site, to really learn about us can do so at www.nysip.net The method in which N.Y.S.I.P. goes about our paranormal investigations is from a scientific stand point. We do not use Ouija boards, hold séances, or occult-type methods, nor do we condone such ways to investigate. New York Society Investigating the Paranormal is dedicated in helping those who believe they are having paranormal activity. We are dedicated to providing proof that there is life after death and paranormal activity. N.Y.S.I.P. goes about our research and investigations from a scientific angle, so we are also able to debunk and prove to our clients that the issue they are having is not supernatural but credible. Regardless of our findings paranormal or non-paranormal N.Y.S.I.P. will attempt to suggest solutions for rectifying your trouble. New York Society Investigating the Paranormal consists of mature adults who take this subject very seriously and use state-of-the-art equipment to attain a scientific clarification for the events transpiring in your home.
What made you decide to get involved in the paranormal?
What made me become interested in the paranormal…or start a paranormal investigative group? It all goes back to my childhood. When I was six years old, I was woken up in the middle of the night by an extremely intense feeling of love, peace, and happiness. I looked to the side of the bed and there were my grandparents smiling down at me. (My grandma had passed many years prior to my being born, and my grandpa passed when I was eighteen months old.) They were solid, yet translucent, and smiling, I smiled back and reached my hand out to them, and they disappeared. The next morning I told my mom that ‘Grandma and Grandpa came to visit me in my room last night’ and proceeded to tell her exactly what happened. My mom, being a firm believer in life-after-death and having her own experiences throughout her life didn’t scoff or make me feel silly but confirmed what I knew. Of course my love for the paranormal was fueled as a child by Scooby Doo, and GhostBusters. The paranormal was always a part of my life. And I have had many personal experiences in my life with entities over the past ten years. The reason why I decided to form my own group (after being a part of a different one) was to help people not be afraid of the afterlife, and to educate them with what I know. To provide validation, or help them, or just listen to their stories.
Since I am a chicken it would all scare me, but what has been the scariest experience for you so far?
Thankfully I have not had one yet. *knock on wood*. Like I tell everyone I meet who is interested in the paranormal, especially paranormal investigating…that with the good spirits there are also bad. I had been on one investigation where I was touched without giving my permission…and I was annoyed. I was on a different one where I felt something…and it was a very dominant energy. I wanted out of that area very badly, to the point where I would not look where I felt it to be. Was it a demon or an evil energy? I don’t think so. I just think it wanted me to know it was there. But it wasn’t a very comfortable feeling for me.
Where is the one place that you want to do an investigation at?
Oh man, that’s a hard question. I have been to some really cool and famous places. I would love to go to Eastern State Penitentiary as Al Capone had been an inmate there, and he was haunted when he was incarcerated there. I had done a piece on the St. Valentine Day Massacre which led me to this information. I’d love to check out some places in Europe…especially Ireland or Scotland. The Stanley in Colorado is another intriguing place…and going back to my roots, The Winchester House in CA. I would really love to be allowed to do an overnight there.
How does one become a paranormal investigator?
Without a doubt, do not dabble in it. Read up on it as much as possible to learn what you are truly getting in to. Try and find an established group which is willing to train a new-comer to investigate the proper way: i.e. never on your own, do not use an Ouija board or occult-type methods to investigate. Because you never know who/what you’re dealing with when you open the door that way. To start out, you don’t need to invest a lot of money in your equipment, a digital camera, digital or analog voice recorder, and an EMF detector (Electro-Magnetic Field) is all you really need. If you do have a camcorder and want to us that too, that’s a plus.
So, what do you have coming up? Any big investigations?
Oh hell yeah! It’s funny because it felt like getting NYSIP off the ground was such a slow process. Now we have several big things within the next few months. New York Society Investigating the Paranormal has been contracted to participate and document an investigation at Gelston Castle, in Mohawk Valley, NY. This place is so steeped in history, what with American presidents being buried there, Russian musicians having resided there and of course some restless spirits. That will be later this month…and will probably be at least a six-month project. In November we will host our own paranormal investigation event in Napanoch, NY at the famous and famously haunted Shanley Hotel. Then in the spring of 2011 we’re heading to PA for an investigation of Hill View Manor. Both the Shanley and Hill View investigations are open to the public…and you can sign up via our web site.
Okay, now to get down to the more bizarre...okay, typical Michelle-Rose conversation questions. Do you really think the world is ready for these kinds of questions and answers? Seriously? Seriously. Hey, if they aren't then they are about to find out that we are, in fact, a little keee-razy!
What has been your favorite Halloween costume? It is both sad and awesome to admit that my favorite Halloween costume I had dressed up as was Wonder Woman, and I was three years old.
I can totally see it! What are you planning to dress up as this year? (I want you to dress up as a Ghostbuster! I think it would be badass!)
LMAO! If I could convince some of my group to dress up as the GB team, I totally would. Normally I am a vampire, as I have my custom fangs. However this year I am going a totally different route….and will be a babe from the 1940’s.
I know that vampires are your weakness...who are your top 5 sexiest
Vampires? Oh geez! This is another hard one. In no particular order: (1) Eric Northman from TrueBlood (Alexander SkarsgÃ¥rd), (2) Bill Compton from TrueBlood (Stephen Moyer), (3) Spike from Buffy the Vampire Slayer (James Marsters), (4) Stefan Salvatore of Vampire Diaries (Paul Wesley), and (5) Damon Salvatore of Vampire Diaries (Ian Somerhalder.) *HOWEVER* I reserve the right to replace one of the aforementioned vampires (should I wish) with Jerry Dandridge from Fright Night….as Colin Farrell will be playing him in the remake.
Hot vampires! For those that do not know, Rose is the one that got me hooked on "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and I have a life long love of Spike! So tell me, do you know how to do the Monster Mash?
I know the words to it. Is there an actual Monster Mash dance? Can you do the Monster Mash?
Ha!! As this will show, yes, yes, I can do the Monster Mash!
What is the scariest movie you have ever seen?
I don’t care what anyone says. The absolute scariest horror movie in my opinion is ‘The Exorcist’. I could not sleep for a month after seeing that. And the first time I ever did see it was on its anniversary release.
What movie has supposed to have been scary but you found rather humorous?
Probably ‘Saw’ because it was so predictable. Or ‘Paranormal Activity’ because I just wanted to beat the crap out of the dude in it. I mean really….the psychic is telling you to leave…and you think you know more than him? C’mon.
The Mummy or Frankenstein? Who's hotter? ;)
Wait….this is a trick question. Boris Karloff played both the Mummy and Frankenstein! Or do you mean who’s hotter- Boris Karloff or Arnold Vosloo as ‘The Mummy? Because then I’d have to go with Arnold Vosloo. BUT…if you simply mean who’s hotter- Mummy or Frankenstein……then I hate to say it, but I’d have to go with Frankenstein. See, like I said…trick question!
You can't go wrong with Arnold Vosloo in the Mummy! Could you kick a zombie's ass or would you be a quick casualty?
Sadly, I must freely admit, that I would without a doubt be zombie food. Zombies are scary!
Thank you Michelle for asking me to be part of this blog interview! It was both an honor, and fun.
I love you…….
Rose

Brain on Shuffle
The top 5 things going through my mind currently:
1 – The Chilean Miners. How amazing was that rescue of all 33 of the miners that were stuck underground? I admit that I got a bit teary eyed on some of them when they came up. And the Chilean President? He just locked up reelection by standing out there the entire time with his wife.
2 – I really love “I think I love you” by The Partridge family. It comes on the oldies station and I really have to struggle to refrain from singing loudly.
3 – I am in zombie state right now with how tired I am. I got about four hours of sleep last night and that was the longest I have slept through the night in a couple of weeks.
4 – I miss “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” being on TV! I have the DVD’s and that is great, but I miss that hour each week where it was “do not call me, do not talk to me, Buffy is on.” Oh and I miss Spike!!
5 – Am I dressing up for Halloween this year?? If so, I probably should get on the ball and get a costume put together.

Hump Day News!
First, I have to wish the most fabulous birthday to the absolutely lovely Lesli at Pretty Random Thoughts!
------------
Did you know that Tuesday is the most depressing day of the week? Hmmm! I would have said Monday because I have to get up and go back to work after a fun weekend off.
-----------
They were talking on the radio about movies you haven’t seen that would shock everyone. So, what movie haven’t you seen that shocks people to hear you say?
I have “Saving Private Ryan”, “Castaway”, “Ace Ventura”, and almost every Clint Eastwood movie. And as much as I love Star Wars, I have not seen the first two of the newer Star Wars movies: Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones.
-----------
How excited am I that the Spooky Trio cereal is out again. You know…Frankenberry, Count Chocula, and Boo Berry! Can’t wait to go to Target and get them!
-----------
Y'all know how much I love Star Wars so imagine how happy this made me:

Look! Han Solo! I want him!

New York State of Mind!
I am in a total New York state of mind lately.
I want to see the sights! The people watching in New York City is right up there with Las Vegas.
I want to see a play or two…do the “Sex and the City” tour…go to the MoMA…Times Square, Central Park, Dylan’s Candy Bar, Macy’s…
It is the trip I plan to take in Fall of 2011 but it can’t get here soon enough.

Brain on vacation? Holiday?
My first email I sent out to a friend this morning said “TGIF”, that should tell you everything about where my mind is, where my day is. I may physically be sitting at my desk, but mentally I am celebrating Columbus Day.
Do we really need a Justin Bieber line of finger nail polish??
Have you seen the Breast Cancer Awareness Barbie? She costs around $500,000 because her necklace is an actual pink diamond. If you want to buy me something for Christmas….
I need to go get my pumpkin soon for Halloween. The last time I carved a pumpkin, sadly it was a couple years ago, I waited too long and paid too much for a pumpkin and it wasn’t that fabulously shaped. I need a pumpkin with character. I still haven’t decided what I am going to carve, but I do have a pumpkin face kit of a bat. (it is wood and you insert them in the pumpkin after painting the pumpkin.)
Are you carving a pumpkin this year? What is your design?

RIP Zen 32!
Very sad that my fave sushi restaurant closed their doors!
Tina and I (with Abby along for the adventure) tried out a new sushi restaurant today, Moto.
It wasn't too bad, but it was definitely not Zen 32! I had the Kalifornia roll (krab, cucumber, and avocado) and the tootsie roll (crab and cucumber inside, tempura outside). The tootsie roll was excellent..the Kalifornia was okay. The waitress was nice, they were quick with the service. It just wasn't Zen!

Bad Blogger!
I’m so sad at how bad I am at blogging lately. I love writing, but have not felt in the proverbial blogging zone lately. I tried to put a structured schedule to my blog, but I rebelled against it. (Yes, only I could rebel against my own mind.) I tried to just blog random things each day, but the randomness well in my head started to run dry. (And that says something, my mind is a constant jumble of chatter.) But I’m here! And I’m way behind on catching up on everyone’s blogs so you may get some random comments out of me on older stuff over the next few days.
Shelley sent me this link yesterday Trick or Treat Disney Style.
Holy cupcakes! Holy sweets!! I want to go to Disney World and have a Mickey cupcake!
If I had known that I would get this kind of response: Johnny Depp's surprise visit to a London school as Captain Jack, I would have wrote a letter to Han Solo as a kid. I love that Johnny Depp, what a guy! And how exciting for that school. Can you imagine what they thought when Captain Jack Sparrow walked in?
Do any of you get the Neiman Marcus Christmas book? I love seeing the fantasy items they have. Such as the Edible Gingerbread Playhouse by Dylan's Candy Bar.
Or maybe the Tory Burch Family Chariot Electric Tricycle
(I do love the cover of the Christmas catalog…so sweet.)
What’s everyone up to for the weekend? Anyone have big plans? Up to mischief? I have a blog entry that I need to work on this weekend to post. My best friend is a paranormal investigator and for the spooktacular month of October did an interview with me. Can't wait for you all to read it. :)

Spooktacular October is here!
Fall has arrived!!
I left work yesterday and you could smell the rain in the air and we had a bit of a downpour before I got home.
This morning it just had that gorgeous Fall feeling out there. It is bliss!
I’m ready to get all the Halloween decorations out and decorate. I had seriously considered if I would bring any of my Halloween stuff to work and decorate my cubicle for the Halloween contest that is being held the week of October 25th. But decided against it. They seem to only allow you to use skeletons and spider web. Uh, yeah…I have ghosts and goblins. Witches and witchy stuff. Spiders, bats, and black cats. Vampires, mummies, and werewolves. I don’t want to just decorate with skeletons and spider webs. That is boring.
Though I will admit that my Halloween decorations are for the most part very cute things…I don’t like the overly spooky stuff. I would give myself the heebie jeebies.
But YAY for Halloween!!! Next to Christmas, this is my favorite holiday to decorate for. And I plan to celebrate the spooky all month long on my blog so get ready!

I won! I won!
If you haven't visited the fabulous Chick Lit is not Dead site run by Liz and Lisa, you are missing out! They feature fun interviews with some of the best chick lit authors out there and many up and coming chick lit authors. And they host awesome giveaways of the books that they are featuring.
A couple of weeks ago, they had a fun bucket list interview with Belinda Carlisle, former lead singer of the Go-Go's. Five commenters on the interview were going to win a copy of Belinda's autobiography, Lips Unsealed.
And I won!!
I won!
I won!
I won!
I just got the book in the mail on Friday from Random House and I can't wait to start reading it! (As soon as I finish the Sookie Stackhouse novel that I am almost done with!)
Thank you, Liz and Lisa!!

Grilled cheese for the win!
While going through a catch up of blogs today, I got to Sarah Grace McCandless' blog "Fortunate Cookie" and saw this link:
The Grilled Cheese Grill!!
Guys! Seriously! A grilled cheese restaurant!! \o/
Honestly, I had a thought once if I ever was to open a restaurant, it would be a grilled cheese restaurant. Can you imagine how awesome it would be?
(And if you want a fun blog, definitely check out Fortunate Cookie. It is fabulous!)

Bueller...Bueller...Bueller
I am in serious need of having a Ferris Bueller sized hooky day from work!
I think that work is making me psychologically sick. No, seriously. I get up in the morning and start driving to work, feeling great. I pull in the parking lot and the clammy feeling starts. By lunch, I am chilled to the bone (okay, part of this is because the a/c runs all the freakin' time and there is an air duct HOLE above my head that blows cold air on me). By 2:00 I generally have a headache and feel sick to my stomach. Come 3:45 I get in my car and start to feel better as I drive away.
I have never been as sick as often as I have in the year and a half I have worked there. It sucks. And this is why I need a Ferris Bueller day off of work...and a new job!
